Meet the New Well (Desktop), Same as the Old Well

Old Well (Chapel Hill) Desktop

Old Well (Chapel Hill) - © John Kivus, 2010

I recently went into the Carolina campus to take some HDR pictures of the Old Well. Though I did get some HDR shots that looked good, I decided to further experiment with them. There was one particular shot that I really turned up the intensity on. After I created a really intense HDR, I then applied Topaz Simplify to the photo in order to get the look above. I immediately made the resulting image the desktop on my computer. Since I’ve had the image on my computer (about 3 weeks at the time of this writing) I’ve had a fairly decent amount of requests for the image either to use as a desktop or as a print to frame. Since I’m following Trey Ratcliff’s model of trying share my images under Creative Commons, I’ve created versions of this image in popular resolutions to use for desktop images on computers, cell phones, and iPads.

    1. That's impressive. It looks a little like a combination between a photograph and a drawing, which certainly adds to its appeal. I would consider using it as my desktop if I didn't, you know, go to hell, Carolina, go to hell. It makes me think that a similar photo shot in B&W and hand-colored would look really cool too. (I doubt you have a darkroom and a set of hand-coloring pens, though. The University might…)
      2. You should try to sell that to the University. They might actually buy it. Or to Student Stores for posters, etc. Unfortunately, I don't know to which person to point you for that. I have a framed picture that someone gave me when I graduated from Davidson that's a similar kind of thing of Chambers Building. I don't know where that came from either, so I'm not of much help, am I?
      3. Your blog insists upon showing me the entries in the mobile theme, even on my desktop, and even if I try to turn the mobile theme off. It also makes it very difficult to log in.
