If You Build It

This is another example of an image that I thought was destined for the front page of my site, but that I ended up deciding just wasn’t up to the quality of stuff I was posting there lately. I still really do like how this image came out, and I even managed to use a few techniques that I learned in Trey Ratcliff’s HDR DVD when I was processing it. I still need to work on fixing some of the localized haloing that can show up in HDR images, but I’m starting to understand the process better.

Waiting

This picture helps me illustrate a little bit of evolution in taste. When I first created it, I thought “this picture will be on the front page for sure.” Now, however, I can’t decide whether or not I think it’s too boring or if meets my minimal level of “interesting-ness”. Also, i did not use to mind highly saturated, almost nuclear feeling, colors. Now, however, the pictures on the left wall kind of bother me.

I might use this image to explore some of the techniques I’ve learned while watching Trey Ratcliff’s new HDR DVD, since remixing in one of the original images might be a good way to tone down the pictures on the wall. I will have a review of that DVD coming up fairly soon. I’ve finally watched all six and half hours of content and I have quite an extensive review in its early draft stages.

Enter at your Own Risk

The main reason for this snapshot posting is because I’m trying out the new Twitter Tools authentication system. Instead of standard username / password setup, it now uses full developer API integration. I guess that’s good if I ever decide I want to write my own twitter client on my website?

This particular photo comes from a trip I took to the Duke Gardens back during International HDR day. I thought this looked like some place that you’d walk into in a video game and then a cut scene would start and a boss battle would happen. Sadly, no one challenged me when I walked through it.

For the Bees

My sister and I went to eat at the Tobacco Road Sports Cafe today for lunch and I walked her past the building that I used to work in, which is now apparently used by Burt’s Bees. This is a picture I took a few weeks ago of that same building. Oh, and Tobacco Road Sports Cafe, really quite good.

Bridge over Fairly Calm Water

Here’s another HDR I took at Duke Gardens last week when I was participating in International HDR Day. I was thinking this was a candidate for black & white conversion, but because the background is so leaf-heavy, the black & white version just way, way too busy.

Reflecting the Sun (International HDR Day Submission)

So today is Trey Ratcliff and Rick Sammon’s International HDR day ( http://dpexperience.com/2010/06/20/two-worlds-in-hdr-announcing-national-hdr-day/ ). Though their assignment was to take a HDR image at some point this week, I thought it would be more fitting to make myself take the image on HDR day itself. I kind of wanted to make a black & white image for my submission, however, I ended up really liking the way sun hit the windows in this image instead.

What will it take for you to try Lucky Strikes?

May 27, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Every time I see the Lucky Strike logo / towers at the American Tobacco complex in Durham, I think of that first bit of Mad Men where the viewer was introduced to Don Draper. Over the past view days, I took a bunch of pictures over at the American Tobacco complex and some of them are going to be showing up on my frontpage pretty soon. This shot didn’t quite make that cut, but I think qualifies for my Snapshots section.

Durham Skyline (from a short tripod)

Though I’ve been really happy with my Zipshot tripod, I wish it was just a little bit taller (or the railings on the top of this parking garage weren’t so ridiculously high). I though about cropping the photo to get rid of the railing but ultimately it just looked better this way. Not quite good enough for my frontpage, but I do kind of like the picture.
