NC Comicon – Spring 2010 – Recap

Yesterday, the guys from Ultimate Comics hosted the first NC Comicon. It took place at the Morrisville Outlet mall in Moorville, NC and spanned across the equivalent of two outlet stores. According to the latest report from their Facebook page, 648 people attended this initial convention. Though there were a few guests in attendance (such as Christos Gage and Tommy Lee Edwards) the convention was consisted mainly of retailers. There are plans for another convention in November under the same NC Comicon banner that should include twice as much space, more guests, and the introduction of panels.
My personal comic convention going experience is quite limited. The only one I have ever attended was last year when I attended HeroesCon in Charlotte. Though I won’t rehash the full experience here, the guest lineup of guys like Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, and Ivan Brandon was top tier and overall I had blast for three days attending that con. I think it would be unfair at this point to try and compare NC Comicon to HeroesCon, however, if the founders of NC Comicon can try and emulate the atmosphere of HeroesCon, I think they could really have something. I look forward to seeing how they grow the convention for the November show and how the turnout changes as a result. Overall, I think NC Comicon is off to a promising start (and that’s not just because I got a signed copy of GI:Cobra II, Issue one from Christos Gage for two bucks).
